The Rotary Club of Johannesburg North Central

The Rotary Club was established by a process commenced on 6 July 1960 and ended with a Charter Dinner on 16 March 1962. There were 23 Charter Members. The first President was John Pitts. Its formal date of recognition by Rotary International was 18 December 1961.

The Club celebrated its 50th anniversary at a Sixties-style formal dinner at the Johannesburg Country Club, Auckland Park, its home venue for many years.

Since 2013 the Club has moved its meeting venues several times and has yet to find a permanent home.

Among our most successful projects have been providing financial support to learners at St Enda Secondary School in Hillbrow by assisting with school fees.

This was taken to another level when financial assistance was provided to series of St Enda’s learners when they entered tertiary institutions. At least seven students have been assisted in this way to graduate from shelter dwellers to professional status and contributing to the upliftment of their communities.

Each year at Christmastime the Club collects gifts from learners at The Ridge Preparatory School in Westcliff and distributes them to children at the Ilanga Nutritional Centre at Kingsway township east of Benoni.

For over thirty years the Club has arranged a Careers Day for Grade 11 learners from four inner city schools at the German International School in Milpark.

The Club’s major fund-raising event is Jazz in the Garden which has been held at the premises of the German – South African Chamber of Commerce in Forest Town on a Sunday in August each year for over twenty years. Entertainment is provided by a Jazz Band and lots of  German food and drink.

Our Club has always had a very multinational membership – South Africans, Germans, Austrians, Ugandans, Kenyans and Tanzanians. Our 2015/16 President was from Uganda.

All working together to make the world a better place and helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
