The Rotary Club of Johannesburg North Central

The Rotary Club was established by a process commenced on 6 July 1960 and ended with a Charter Dinner on 16 March 1962. There were 23 Charter Members. The first President was John Pitts. Its formal date of recognition by Rotary International was 18 December 1961. The Club celebrated its 50th anniversary at a sixties-style formal dinner at the Johannesburg Country Club, Auckland Park, its home venue for many years.

Since 2013 the Club has moved its meeting venues several times and has yet to find a permanent home. Currently it meets at the German Old Age Home in Milpark.

Among the club’s most successful projects has been providing financial support to learners at St Endas Secondary School in Hillbrow by assisting with school fees.

This was taken to another level when financial assistance was provided to a series of St Enda’s learners when they entered tertiary institutions. At least seven beneficiaries have been assisted in this way, graduating from recognised tertiary institutions and contributing to the upliftment of their communities.

Each year at Christmas, the Club collects gifts from learners at The Ridge Preparatory School in Westcliff and distributes them to children at the Ilanga Nutritional Centre at Kingsway township east of Benoni.

For over thirty years the Club has arranged a Careers Day for Grade 11 learners from four inner city schools at the German International School in Milpark.

On 19 AUGUST 2018, our club’s major fund-raising event, Jazz-in-the-Garden, will be held in the gardens of the Bosheuvel Country Estate, Muldersdrift. As usual, the Cattleman’s Kitchen will serve their delicious variety of meats on spits and their own Pitzgauer Craft brew. These will definitely draw a crowd that loves good food, wine and craft beer! John Marshall’s Swing Revival will keep you up on your feet and swinging to wonderful Jazz! FUND RAISE THE FUN WAY!! Don’t miss out on the day’s events and many other delights.
